[July 5, 2023New Special Issue

Dear Colleagues,

In recent decades, geometric modelling has become an interesting and powerful branch of modern science and engineering, driven by innovations and breakthroughs in computer-aided design (CAD) and visualisation technologies. Its theories are mainly rooted in mathematics and computer science, enabling applications in diverse fields such as industrial design, computer graphics, visualisation and animation, CAD/CAM, virtual reality (VR), architecture, biomedical engineering and others. However, we believe that the field of geometric modelling needs continuous exploration and innovation to reach new frontiers and to penetrate into areas where it is less used than in other fields, such as biology, space science, nanoengineering, chemical engineering, quality engineering, environmental engineering, robotics, solar engineering, etc.  In this context, we aim to focus this Special Issue on the intersection and synthesis of geometric modelling, CAD and innovative technologies. We are looking for groundbreaking research on curve and surface modelling, visual perception, geometric aesthetics, and the integration of novel mathematical methods and innovative technologies such as artificial intelligence and virtual, augmented and mixed reality into future CAD systems. In addition, we are particularly interested in innovative technologies for CAD and the integration of fundamentally new mathematical approaches and paradigms, as well as in AI-based tools that have the potential to revolutionise CAD and geometric modelling. The scope of this Special Issue includes original research in the field of geometric modelling and CAD and its applications in various domains, including innovations, engineering, art, physics, medical engineering, computer graphics and architecture. We also encourage submissions that explore theoretical mathematics and geometry that can be applied to address challenges and create innovative approaches to geometric modelling and CAD. We hope that this Special Issue will serve as a platform for researchers and practitioners to share their knowledge and insights, paving the way for exciting advances and innovative approaches in geometric modelling and CAD. We look forward to receiving your contributions and together driving innovation in the field forward.

[December 1, 2020] Courses for Spring 2021

I will teach the following classes in the Spring 2021 semester. Please note if you are interested.

42036-01 SMART FACTORY (스마트팩토리) [New and unique course at Keimyung University]

Modern factories and plants have evolved and become more automated, computerised as well as complex. Therefore, there is a vital necessity to develop new smart approaches for controlling industrial system and processes and managing workers. Smart manufacturing is an emerging form of production integrating manufacturing assets of today and tomorrow with sensors, computing platforms, communication technology, control, simulation, data-intensive modelling and predictive engineering. It utilises the concepts of cyber-physical systems spearheaded by the internet of things, cloud computing, service-oriented computing, artificial intelligence and data science. Industry 4.0, cyber-physical production systems, smart manufacturing, intelligent manufacturing and advanced manufacturing, are frequently used synonymously with smart factory. Used by manufacturing companies, a smart factory works by employing technology such as artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, analytics, big data and the internet of things (IoT) and can run largely autonomously with the ability to self-correct.

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In recent decades, geometric modeling has evolved into an interesting and powerful branch of modern science and engineering. Its theories are mostly related to mathematics and computer science, and applications are commonly found in industrial design, graphics and animation, CAD/CAM, architecture, and other areas. Most of the popular approaches in geometric modeling include parametric spline curve and surfaces, and they are simple and intuitive for use for industrial designers. On the other hand, as is well known among researchers who study high-quality shapes, polynomial splines are not adequate for reaching highly-aesthetic requirements in industrial products. We believe that the field of geometric modeling needs breakthrough research which will result in a higher level of understanding of shape modeling and perception, the need of artificial intelligence in the CAD systems of the future, as well as the necessity of fundamentally new mathematical tools and paradigms which will revolutionize geometric modeling.

In view of the above, we invite you to submit your latest research in the area of geometric modeling to the Special Issue entitled “Modern Geometric Modeling: Theory and Applications”. The five most outstanding manuscripts will be accepted free of charge.

The scope of the Special Issue includes but is not limited to original research works within the subject of geometric modeling and its applications in engineering, physics, biology, medicine, computer graphics, architecture, etc., and also the theory of computational mathematics and geometry, which can be applied to problems of geometric modeling.
